The shortening of leukocyte telomere length relates to DNA hypermethylation of LINE-1 in type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Size of study:
205 type 2 diabetes patients and 213 healthy age and sex matched controls

Summary
This well controlled study looked at 205 patients with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and 213 healthy controls of the same age and sex. The researchers then measured leukocyte telomere length in both groups using qPCR, the same method used by TeloYears. They found that the diabetic group had shorter telomere length than control and that telomere length decreased with age in both populations. The researchers conclude that Type 2 diabetes may be associated with shorter telomere length.
