Higher serum vitamin D concentrations are associated with longer leukocyte telomere length in women

Peer-Reviewed Scientific Journal:
American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Size of study:
2160 women, 18-79 years of age

Summary
Higher vitamin D concentrations are associated with longer leukocyte telomere length. The difference in leukocyte telomere length between the highest and lowest tertiles of vitamin D concentrations was 107 base pairs,  which is equivalent to 5 years of telomeric aging. In addition to being older biologically,  the difference was further accentuated by increased concentrations of C-reactive protein, which is a measure of systemic inflammation.
